Established in November of 2008, Right Cause (Правое Дело) is one of Russia’s youngest political parties. Right Cause formed from a merger of three smaller parties: the Union of Right Forces (Союз Правых Сил, commonly called “СПС” or “SPS”), Civil Force (Гражданская Сила), and the Democratic Party of Russia (Демократическая Партия России).

While the formation of the Kremlin-approved, pro-business, liberal party was relatively smooth, its post-formation history has been much more rocky, marked by relatively poor showings at the polls and infighting among the members and leaders who still seem to act as though they are members of separate parties vying for control of the new organization.
The letter below is an open letter of complaint posted on the site of the Democratic Party of Russia (which continues to maintain its own site). It details many of the complaints that have also been publicly aired by party members in the media.

| Все последние месяцы члены «Правого дела», средства массовой информации, граждане России с недоумением наблюдают за непрекращающимся внутрипартийным конфликтом. Публичное выяснение, кто из лидеров главнее, обмен обвинениями, радикальные предложения по переустройству партии — все это не только противоречит уставу партию, но и здравому смыслу. | For the past few months, members of Right Cause, the media, and the citizens of Russia have been perplexed by the incessant conflict within the party. Public explanations on who is the party’s main leader, accusations flying amongst party members, radical suggestions on restructuring the party – all of this not only contradicts the party’s founding principles, but also defies all common sense and logic. |

Блокирована работа по обновлению программы, которая писалась второпях и не отвечает сегодняшним российским реалиям. Лидеры сосредоточились на саморекламе, при этом партия фактически не может выработать консолидированное мнение ни по одному злободневному вопросу. | The results are already evident – personal ambitions have prevented the party’s leadership from agreeing on a list of nominees to run in the Moscow City Duma elections.[1] The work on renewing the party program has been blockaded. The program was hastily written and is out of touch with the current situation in Russia. Its leaders have been focused only on self-advertising and because of this the party literally cannot work out a compromise on any of the pressing issues. |
| Мы убеждены, что такое поведение уважаемых сопредседателей наносит огромный ущерб репутации партии, дискредитирует наши цели. Непрерывная политическая «война» в центре подрывает авторитет руководителей партии в регионах, мешает организационной работе по привлечению сторонников, процессу фандрайзинга, агитации. И все это — накануне нового масштабного избирательного цикла, который может стать решающим для «Правого дела». | We are convinced that such behavior on behalf of our respected co-chairs will seriously damage the party’s reputation and discredit our goals. This constant political “war” in Moscow is undermining the authority of party leaders in the regions, hindering the processes of fundraising, campaigning, and attracting more supporters. And all of this is happening on the eve of a major new election cycle that could be decisive for Right Cause.[2] |
| Давайте будем реалистами, все мы находимся в одной лодке. ДПР, СПС и «Гражданская сила» объединялись вовсе не для того, чтобы погрязнуть в интригах и скандалах, и партийцы в регионах, отлично понимая это, находят общий язык и забывают о прежних разногласиях. Почему это не происходит в Москве? Неужели те, кто призывают к расколу, к отмене и аннулированию всех договоренностей, которые позволили нам создать партию, не понимают что, в конечном счете, это приведет к тому, что «Правое дело» просто перестанет существовать? | Let’s be realistic for a moment, since we are all in the same boat. The Democratic Party, the Union of Right Forces, and Civil Force did not merge in order to wallow in intrigue and scandals. Regional party members understand this perfectly and are finding common ground and forgetting past differences. Why can’t this happen in Moscow, too? Surely those who are calling for factional splits within the party or for annulment of all the agreements which allowed the party to be created understand that this will ultimately lead to Right Cause’s demise. |
| Мы считаем, что есть только одна сила в стране, которая способна рассудить зашедший слишком далеко спор в партийном руководстве — это российские избиратели. | We believe that there is only one force in the country that is capable of arbitrating this disagreement within the party that has gone too far, and that is the Russian electorate. |
| Именно поэтому мы обращаемся к каждому из сопредседателей партии с просьбой возглавить на мартовских выборах 2010 года избирательный список, по меньшей мере, в одном из регионов и взять на себя личную ответственность за результат. | This is precisely why we are asking each of the party’s co-chairs to run in the March 2010 elections in one region and take personal responsibility for the outcome. |
| Это единственный честный способ выяснить не на словах, а на деле, кто способен принести партии пользу, обеспечить ее материальные и организационные потребности, провести грамотную и эффективную избирательную кампанию. Только тогда можно будет судить о том, кто из наших лидеров сможет привести «Правое дело» к победе на выборах 2011 года. | This is the only honest way to show in deeds, not words, who is truly beneficial to the party, who can secure its material and organizational requirements, and who can lead a competent and effective election campaign. It is only then that it will be possible to judge which one of our leaders can lead Right Cause to victory in the 2011 elections.[3] |

[1] Russian elections run on the “party list” system. Parties put forth public lists of candidates for legislature and the voters are allowed to cast their vote only for one party, rather than for individual candidates. Parties are then assigned seats proportional to the percentage of the vote they one. The parties may work outside the party lists, however, when appointing people to those seats.
