While Americans gather around TV screens to watch a ball drop on Times Square to bring in the New Year, Russians gather around to watch an annual address before watching the Kremlin clock tower ring in the New Year. This Russian tradition can be traced back to 1941. This year, Putin’s speech focused on themes that many of his speeches and public statements have focused on over the past year: encouraging family values and self-reliance among Russians.
