The Archive of the Russian Academy of Science (Архив Российской Академии Наук) is the oldest archive in Russia. Established under Peter the Great, it is located in St. Petersburg. In 1922, a second location was established in Moscow.
The archive contains documentation on research by academic institutions in practically all areas of science. It also contains financial and management documentation for fundamental research conducted in Russia. Photo, audio, film, technical and electronic documentation, as well as personal funds of members of Russian Academy of Science and other prominent scholars.

ARAN has one reading room in Moscow, two branches in St. Petersburg and one branch in Yaroslavl region.
Prep Beforehand
The ARAN putivoditel is available only online.
Due to COVID restrictions, all visits must be scheduled in advance by calling at 8-499-129-15-55. Limited space is available.
To order materials from ARAN in advance, a scholar should send an email three working days prior to his/her arrival, with an official letter from a supporting institution attached. The email should be as follows:

Working days between requesting delo and receipt: 3 days
Maximum delo that can be requested at one time: 10
Photos/Photocopies/Scans: Copies and scans vary in cost based on age and type of document. Photocopies from hardcopy documents run 70-775 rubles per page. Wait time between ordering and reciept is about one month. Scans are generally ready faster than photocopies, but cost between 194 and 1082 rubles per page. Photos taken from a smartphone will cost 1,000 rubles per 30 minutes of photographing (20 sheets maximum) or 50 rubles per sheet.
