Vestnik – Issue 15, Spring 2014

[display-map id=’6422′]

Vestnik was launched by SRAS in 2004 as one of the world’s first online academic journals focused on showcasing student research. We welcome and invite papers written by undergraduates, graduates, and postgraduates. Research on any subject related to the broad geographic area outlined above is accepted. If you have written solid research eligible for publication according to the guidelines listed here, please submit it.

In this, its fifteenth issue, Vestnik brings you a special feature: a brand-new translation of Sigizmund Krzhizhanovsky’s “The Rosary.” Sophia Rehm, a recent graduate from the University of Chicago, completed this translation and offers a fascinating introduction covering not only Krzhizhanovsky’s life and work, but also the specific challenges posed by the art and science of translation.

In our history/political focus, we have articles on various post-Soviet cultures and their political and cultural contexts. Alana Holland, an MA student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has contributed “Trends in Soviet and Post-Soviet Udmurt Cultural Memory,” looking at the cultural challenges of a specific Russian minority group native to the Urals. Helen Lilley, a recent graduate of the University of Cambridge, wrote “Nationalism as a Political Factor in Late-Soviet Kazakhstan,” an extensive overview of subject. David Galick, a senior at St. Olaf College, focuses in “Responding to the Dual Threat to Kazakhness” specifically on the issues of concern to Alash, one of Kazakhstan’s earliest and most successful nationalist parties.

In our literature focus, Anya Corke, a recent graduate in Russian and Philosophy from Wellesley College, explores Competing Conceptions of the Good Life in Anna Karenina. Lastly, Molly Porter, a junior at the University of Notre Dame studying Russian, looks at Rational Perversions of Love in The Brothers Karamazov.

We hope you will find this issue interesting and informative. Share it with your friends, classmates, and colleagues if you do!
